Mechanical Door Bell

Doorbells have been around probably as long as there have been doors. And that is a long time. Before we automated the doorbell with our electronic relay system that dominates the market now, there was some form of mechanical method used to alert you if someone was at the door or that someone had walked in the front door of your house or business.

We have all seen movies set in the early 20th century that used a simple bell that dangled above the front door of a business. When a person walked in, a string tied to the door pulled the bell and made it ring alerting the proprietor that a customer has entered or left the building. There was always something quaint and homey about that simple bell jingling when someone came in. We lost that atmosphere when doorbells went modern on us.

The idea of returning to that simpler design has some appeal. For many, it fits with a lifestyle of going green and becoming simpler in every aspect of life. While the actual amount of power that is drawn for someone to ring your doorbell is quite small, it is more of a statement that you are going to go back to a manual system that does not rely on electricity at all in as much of your lifestyle as possible. So when a visitor sees that you have installed a mechanical system at the front door, that sends a clear message that this house is committed to living in step with the environment and living simply with as little carbon footprint as possible.

The bell over the door system works well in a retail setting. But a doorbell for your home that is totally mechanical uses a replacement form of energy and that is a simple wound up spring. A powerful spring lives within the housing of the doorbell held back by a simple gear mechanism. The owner "winds up" the doorbell from time to time so that spring is coiled and ready for action. When the visitor activates the doorbell, the spring is released for one tick of the gear. That movement activates a manual chime or bell inside the home with one simple and elegant note to let the occupants know that company has arrived.

It is a system that is beautiful in its simplicity. It does call on you to wind up your doorbell every so often but that is not difficult. And because the mechanism is so simple, it can last forever because there is very little to the doorbell that might break. It is earth friendly, in step with a simplified life and nostalgic if that is your décor. But there is one more big value to putting in an older doorbell technology like this. Its fun!
